Brandon Miller carried the Charlotte Hornets to a 110-103 home win over the Washington Wizards on Monday night. He scored 39 points, a new season high, two nights after putting up 34 against Miami. That is 73 points across his last two games.

Miller takes over after a slow start

Miller opened with 4 points on 2-of-7 shooting in the first quarter, and Washington led 21-19 after 12 minutes. Then he found his range. He scored 14 in the second quarter, hitting three threes, as Charlotte won the period 35-23 and went to halftime ahead 54-44. He added 13 more in the third, and the Hornets carried an 80-68 lead into the fourth.

He finished 15-of-28 from the field, 5-of-10 from three and 4-of-5 at the line, with 6 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks in 36 minutes. Charlotte were +16 with him on the floor. In the fourth quarter he made all three of his shots for 8 points.

The glass decided the margin

Charlotte outrebounded Washington 54-41. Moussa Diabaté grabbed 17 rebounds to go with 11 points and 3 blocks, and Naz Reid posted 18 points and 12 rebounds. The Hornets also made 14 of 17 free throws, while Grayson Allen went 7-of-7 at the line on his way to 15 points.

The rest of the backcourt struggled. Dennis Schröder shot 4-of-15 and missed all five of his threes, and Charlotte made just 12 of 39 attempts from deep as a team.

Washington's fourth-quarter push falls short

Anthony Davis led the Wizards with 29 points and 10 rebounds on 11-of-22 shooting and didn't commit a turnover. Trae Young had 22 points and 10 assists, and Kyshawn George added 20 on 8-of-14. Washington scored 35 points in the fourth quarter to cut into the deficit, but they never got all the way back after trailing by 12 entering the period.

Washington shot 41-of-85 (48.2%) from the field, better than Charlotte's 42-of-97, but made only 9 of 28 threes. Bilal Coulibaly was held to 3 points on 1-of-5 shooting.
